"The mission of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools High/Middle/Elementary School Guidance Program is to partner with parents, community, faculty and staff to provide a comprehensive, developmental counseling program addressing the academic, career, and personal/social development of all students thus preparing them with the knowledge and skills to be productive members of society."

                                                             Mrs. Bowen             Mrs. Fish
Mrs. Bowen, the kindergarten and first grade counselor, is at Centerville on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Mrs. Fish, our full time counselor, works with students in grades two through five.

Classroom Guidance:  The classroom guidance program is a series of structured developmental lessons and is organized to help students acquire, develop and demonstrate competencies within the three domains: academic, career and personal/social.  During the first few months of the school year, the focus is on the academic domain.  Lessons in all grade levels are based on the following guidance standard:  Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the life span.  Students will work on improving their classroom listening skills, developing responsible work habits, homework and study , and understanding how appropriate classroom behaviors contribute to academic success.

Small Groups:  The following small group programs will be starting in October.  Each group program meets for 30 minutes per week for approximately six weeks.

  • Anchors Away (deployment support)
  • K.I.D.S. (Kids Involved in Divorce and Separation)
  • Anger Management (grades 2-5 only)
  • Step-by-Step (adjusting to stepfamily living)

If you are interested in any of these groups for your child, please contact your child’s counselor.

Parent Resources:  The guidance department has a number of books and videos on a variety of parenting topics, including discipline, child development, special needs such as learning disabilities ADHD, and giftedness, and more.  If you would like to borrow any of these materials, please contact your child’s counselor or visit the guidance office to see what is available.

Principles of American Citizenship
The school system has adopted the following principles to be reinforced during the school year. This is accomplished through the classroom teachers, the PTA and the classroom guidance lessons. Each month the citizenship trait is identified and incorporated in the monthly classroom guidance lessons taught by Mrs. Bowen and Mrs. Fish. As counselors, we support the goals of parents and teachers in helping our students understand and develop these qualities.

September – Responsibility
October – Diligence
November – Respect
December – Kindness
January – Fairness
February – Honesty
March – Cooperation
April – Self Control
May – Trustworthiness
